10 Awesome Features of New Castellan Game + Giveaway
Steve Jackson’s brand new, 2013 game, Castellan, is an absolute blast! It is a very unique, 2-player strategy game that is a ton of fun. Points are won by claiming courtyards, or completely surrounded areas, with your keeps. The more towers in the courtyard, the more points that keep is worth! The gameplay is simple, but the strategic options are limitless.
1 – Castle Theme - Normally, castle-themed games are based on some variant of attack and defense. Castellan is completely different focusing on territory and enclosures.
2 – Game Box - Rarely do you see a cool, stylish game box anymore, but this game has one! I was very impressed.
3 – Expansion - There is a red and blue set and a green and yellow set. Each set alone can be played with two players. However, the two sets can combine to create a large, four-player set!
4 – Fit - I am always iffy about puzzle and piece-connecting games. I get bothered when the pieces don’t consistently fit well! =-) Castellan’s pieces fit together very easily and stay together. I was impressed.
5 – Card Usage - All players must play the exact same cards each game. They are drawn and played in different order, but all cards played are the same. This adds to the unique dynamics of Castellan.
6 – Pieces - The castle pieces are incredibly detailed and sturdy. I had no problem letting my son play with his “castle game!”
7 – Points - Points are not won by the largest or most complex courtyard but rather by how many towers are in contact with your courtyard. A tiny, square courtyard could be worth 18 points (with the double keep)!
8 – 2-Player - I love fun, captivating 2-player games that my wife and I can play after our son goes to bed! There are too few out there, but Castellan is definitely one of them.
9 – Size - I don’t always think that bigger is better, but I was impressed with the size and amount of pieces this game has. It creates a fairly large castle before the game is through, and with the 4-player expansion, it’s huge!
10 – Title - I love when games have a title with meaning behind it. Back in medieval times, a “Castellan” was a captain or governor of a castle with stewardship over its operations. Very fitting!
